The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

American measurements and weights are based on the units used in Britain before 1826, which was the date when the imperial system was officially in place. Until 1960-1963 American and British length measurements were distinct in 2 Parts per Million. At the beginning of the 20th century, this began to cause issues and the governments of both nations came together to improve the measures to exactly match. Since then Great Britain and the United States used the same measures of length. The U.S. the old standard of foot was maintained with the designation US survey foot.

British Imperial Measure prior to 1963

First English official measurement standards were defined in 15th century. British unit system, also known as imperial units, was introduced in 1824. This was when the British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 repealed the entire British measures laws and redefined the existing units. In 1963, the Weights and Measures Act standartized international measures.

International Nautical Measure

The International Nautical Mile was established by the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the only definition in widespread current use and is also the one recognized by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Before 1929 , several nations had their own definitions, including it was the case that Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately recognize the international standard.

• 1799 - 1889 from 1799 to 1889, brass, platinum and the mixture of platinum with 10% iridium meters were made, and still serve as an alloy with the Earth's meridian length. The 1st General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1889 established the meter as the distance that lies between two lines on a typical bar of the second type of alloy. This International Prototype Meter is kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres close to Paris. That meter definition was in use until 1960 and also the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
• Between 1960 and 1983, the meter was re-defined again as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths from the orange-red radiation Krypton86 under certain conditions.
• 17th Conference determined the meter as 1/299,792,458 in the distance light travels in one second This measurement definition has been in place until today.
